Do I need to apply for anything before I travel to China?
No — with a Luxembourg passport, you don't need to apply for a visa or authorisation before flying to China. Just make sure your passport itself is valid and, if you have one, bring proof of your onward or return travel in case you're asked.
Can I extend my stay in China once I'm there?
Only in limited circumstances, and not simply to keep travelling. You must apply before your current permission expires, and where a fee applies it is . The 30-day visa-free entry is not routinely extendable. The Exit-Entry Administration may grant additional time only for genuine emergencies such as serious illness or a natural disaster, on a case-by-case basis. Roughly CNY 160–200 (about USD 22–28), paid at the Public Security Bureau. Published figures start as low as CNY 50 depending on city and visa type. Apply at the local Public Security Bureau Exit-Entry Administration before your 30 days end, with documentary proof of the emergency. Approval is not guaranteed. For a planned stay beyond 30 days, apply for an L visa before travelling — an L visa can be extended once by about 30 days, a visa-free entry cannot.

Before you travel — checklist
- Check your passport has enough remaining validity for your trip to China — many countries require at least 6 months beyond your travel dates, even for visa-free entry.
- Note this specific requirement for China: Visa-free from 14 March 2024 to 31 December 2026. 30-day visa-free for flight crew members. 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit to a third country or region (including Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan) using any mode of transport. Must have a confirmed onward ticket/itinerary, and enter through 1 of 64 approved ports. During which, may freely travel within the 24 provinces permitted for visa-free transi.
- Check whether China requires proof of onward or return travel — some border officers ask for this even when it isn't formally listed as a requirement.
- Consider travel insurance that covers your trip to China, particularly if any medical or emergency evacuation coverage is required or advisable for the region.
