How far in advance should I apply for my Australia e-visa?

Apply as early as you can once your travel dates are set. Processing times can vary, especially around holidays or peak travel seasons, so leaving it until the last few days before your flight is risky — an e-visa that's still pending when you're due to board can mean being denied boarding.

What happens if my Australia e-visa application is rejected?

Rejections do happen, and the reason isn't always given in detail. If yours is rejected, check that every field matched your passport exactly, that your passport has enough remaining validity, and that any required photo or document met the stated format — then reapply or, if time is short, contact Australia's official visa portal or nearest consulate directly rather than guessing.

Can I extend my stay in Australia once I'm there?

No. This permission cannot be extended from inside Australia, so plan to leave before it expires. An ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651) cannot be extended or renewed while you are in Australia, whatever the reason. AUD $250 is the charge for the subclass 600 you would need instead. To stay longer you must either apply for a subclass 600 Tourist stream from inside Australia, or leave and re-enter on a fresh ETA or eVisitor. An ETA or eVisitor never carries condition 8503, so a subclass 600 application from inside Australia is open to you — unlike holders of some sponsored visitor visas.
